With water, the velocity causes a "vacuum bubble" at the bottom...and the water rushes back to fill the vaccum hitting the glass at high velocity to break it. With a carbonated beverage, the CO2 will fill that vaccum and the liquid won't rush back to hit the glass as hard. Don't try this because the glass can shard and cut your hand."
